VC-ER-1

Distinctive characteristics of this form:

has two octagonal frames - at the top and in the lower left corner - same design as VC-EO-9;
text under heading indicates the Messenger would wait for up to three minutes for a reply to be written;
vertical text at left indicates a transmission form was also enclosed;
flap on the reverse has a rounded peak and curved sides.

There had been some doubt about the classification of this envelope as being issued in the Colonial period or in the Interim period. The discovery of the Fitzroy cover in late 2017 clarified the classification as being Colonial. Another cover front discovered subsequently used at Geelong on 9 March 1896 further confirms the Colonial status.

These envelopes were clearly marked with an instruction for the Messenger to wait for three minutes for a reply. The envelopes contained a transmission for for the reply (if any).

It is estimated that less that 5 examples are recorded - few are complete.


VC-ER-1. For delivery in Fitzroy. 31 May 1893. Date stamp is a complete and clear Fitzroy 1 hole Belt & Buckle design in black. Age and improper storage have faded the otherwise bright green colour of the paper.
